Working at Heights & Fall Protection

A complete, ready-to-use Toolbox Talk template for safety officers and supervisors — covering OSHA-compliant fall protection, harness inspection, hazard identification, and crew engagement.

  • 36% of construction deaths are fall-related (OSHA)
  • 6 ft minimum height requiring fall protection
  • 5,000lbs minimum load for anchor points
  • #1 cause of construction fatalities worldwide

Why This Talk Matters

Falls from height remain the single leading cause of death in the construction industry worldwide. According to OSHA, falls account for over one-third of all construction-related fatalities every single year.

Despite being one of the most preventable hazards on any construction site, workers continue to be killed and seriously injured because of three root causes: inadequate fall protection systemsinsufficient training, and poor pre-task planning. A Toolbox Talk on Working at Heights is not just a compliance checkbox — it is a genuine lifesaving conversation. When a supervisor takes 10–15 minutes before the workday begins to walk through fall hazards, equipment checks, and site-specific risks, they dramatically reduce the probability of an incident that cannot be undone.

When to Deliver This Talk

Conduct this toolbox talk every day before workers will be performing tasks at heights of 6 feet or more above a lower level. This includes roofing, scaffolding, formwork, steel erection, ladder work, and work near unprotected edges or floor openings.

This post provides the complete Toolbox Talk template from Safety with CK, with expanded explanations for each section so you can deliver the talk with confidence and depth. Use the template as your guide and download the free Word document below to bring to your next pre-start meeting.

Talk Details at a Glance

Before conducting this toolbox talk, share the following session overview with your crew so they know what to expect:

  • Topic- Working at Heights & Fall Protection
  • Duration- 10–15 Minutes
  • Target Audience- All workers performing tasks at elevation (6 ft or more)
  • Recommended Frequency- Before any elevated work start

This talk is suitable for all construction trades including ironworkers, roofers, scaffolders, carpenters, concrete workers, painters, and general labourers. Anyone on site who may pass through or work near an elevated work zone should also attend.

Objective

To ensure all workers understand the risks associated with working at heights and are equipped with the knowledge and tools to protect themselves and their colleagues.

A clear objective keeps your toolbox talk focused and meaningful. By the end of the session, every worker in attendance should be able to answer three core questions:

  • What are the fall hazards present at today’s worksite?
  • Is their personal fall protection equipment in serviceable condition?
  • What is the emergency response plan if a fall occurs?

If workers cannot answer these three questions confidently, the talk has not been completed — regardless of how much time was spent.
